与高血脂和吸烟一样,高血压是动脉粥样硬化最重要的病因之一。由于动脉粥样硬化会引起心脏病、中风以及其它因循环系统损伤而导致的疾病,因此高血压必须得到有效的控制。生活方式的改变 (如戒烟、降低体重以及增加运动等) 能够显著地降低血压。关于运动,有研究发现每周进行有氧运动 60~90 分钟就足够获得极大的益处。研究还发现每天进行4次为时10分钟的快速行走 (不妨称为 “运动点心”) 能够明显地改善血压水平。如果改变生活方式还不足以降低血压,或者如果您不愿意或不能改变生活方式,许多有效的药物可供使用。不过您可能需要对它们进行尝试以找到对您最有效的药物。

对降血压可能有效的自然疗法包括:
- 辅酶Q10 (Coenzyme Q10): 一项历时8个星期的对59位已经在使用药物控制高血压的男性所进行的双盲试验发现,每天使用 120mg 辅酶 Q10 的人可以多降低血压 10% 的水平。另外,一项历时12个星期的对83位 “单纯收缩期高血压” (高血压的一种类型,表现为只是收缩压偏高) 患者的双盲试验发现,每天使用辅酶 Q10 60mg 也可以使血压降低 10% 左右。
- 其它可能有效的自然疗法: 虽然从直觉上来讲,“放松疗法” 应该能够降低血压,但是其科学证据远不足以令人信服。对有关的17项临床试验的综合分析发现,只有 “超脱静坐” (Transcendental meditation) 会明显降低血压,而其它的放松疗法如生物反馈 (Biofeedback),逐步肌肉松弛法和精神压力管理 (Stress management) 却没有这样的效果。另外,虽然研究结果并不一致,但总体来讲,鱼油至少可以轻微地降低血压水平。一些研究还发现食用纤维可能会使得高血压有所好转。三项初步的双盲试验发现巧克力 (富含多酚) 有助于控制轻度的高血压。很多研究还发现大蒜能轻微地 (5~10%) 降低血压。研究人员在总结了26项有关太极在治疗高血压方面的研究后发现,其中 85% 的研究结果显示太极对降低血压有好处。


注: 甜菊是一种甜味剂。在国内进行的两项研究发现它可以降低血压大约 6~10% ,但其中的有些数据令人困惑,而且其他的研究者进行的两项独立研究不能重复出这样的结果。
