黄斑是人眼视网膜中心附近的一个椭圆形区域,负责高敏锐度的视觉。黄斑变性 (Macular degeneration) 是指黄斑功能逐步下降。它是引起65岁以上人群视力下降的第二大常见原因,仅次于白内障。吸烟、高血压、动脉粥样硬化等是造成黄斑变性的重要原因。另外,紫外光 (如日光) 照射后在眼部产生有害自由基也会导致黄斑变性。

干性黄斑变性是黄斑变性最常见的形式,它是由于脂褐素在视网膜色素上皮沉积造成的。另外一种较少见的形式 (即湿性黄斑变性) 与眼睛中的血管异常增殖有关。目前,对于干性黄斑变性尚无很有效的治疗方法;而对湿性黄斑变性,如果及时治疗,可以非常成功,但若不治疗同样会导致不可逆的失明。正因如此,如果发现有黄斑变性症状,及时看医生非常有必要。
